Sustainability at HSBC

Corporate Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of HSBC's long term strategy and we aim to ensure that sustainable business principles permeate every level of our business and culture.

We refer to "corporate sustainability" rather than "corporate responsibility" as it describes more succinctly the management of our direct environmental footprint, sustainability risk and business opportunities, and our community investment activities.

HSBC supports the economies in which we operate by providing employment, making tax contributions, payments to suppliers, and investments in local businesses. We also make a direct contribution to communities through donations of both time and money.

We recognise that a thriving society is critical to our future success as bank. That is why we focus our community investment activity on education and the environment - the fundamental building blocks for the development of communities.

In 2009, HSBC globally spent US$100 million on community investment activities.
